What Are USB Drivers?

usb cablesUniversal Serial Bus, popularly known as USB, has been around for a long time. It is a standard means of interfacing different peripherals to your computer. Standardized USB drivers and protocols across devices have made most of these USB devices virtually plug-and-play.

Prior to the existence of USB, PCs needed to have different types of ports for different devices, such as: parallel port for printer, PS2 connector for keyboard and mouse, MIDI connector for joysticks. Today, almost all devices are compatible with USB. The USB ports behind your PC are and what you find behind compact and elegant which can support any device.

Windows USB Drivers Detection Method

When a USB device is plugged into your PC's USB port, the system immediately detects it and searches internally for the best available driver from the Windows USB drivers database and maps it to the device.

For example, if you plug in a Kingston USB flash drive, you will see a series of messages stating that Windows has detected the device and is installing a driver for it. Once Windows finds a relevant driver, you see a message saying that the device is ready to use.
